Job description

Ealing Council has an ambitious Climate and Ecological Emergency Strategy, and we are working on a new Transport Strategy. Supporting active and sustainable travel is a key goal, with our work focusing on cycling, walking, public transport and electric vehicles. We have a new cycle network plan showing the cycle routes we want to create or upgrade over the next 10 years.

To support these goals, we are seeking an enthusiastic, creative and motivated individual to join our Highways team, with responsibility for developing the cycle network. In this role you would initiate and develop projects to create a comprehensive, joined-up cycle network in the borough. You would also work with colleagues to maximise benefits for active travel from changes in parks, from new developments, and from other highways projects.

Likely to be a regular cyclist yourself, you will have excellent understanding of the benefits of cycling and the issues that deter it. You will be aware of current published cycle infrastructure guidance and be able to take an active role in updating and improving it.

We are looking for someone organised and self-motivated, with knowledge and experience of delivering transport projects in the public or private sector, reviewing engineering drawings, and producing briefs for consultants. You will have a keen interest in all forms of active and sustainable travel and will have either a relevant degree (environmental studies, transport planning, civil engineering or a related discipline) or equivalent experience.

It’s an exciting time to join Ealing. We are the third largest London borough by population, with many diverse communities and seven key town centres. We have ambitious plans to tackle the climate crisis, create good jobs, and fight inequality. We are involved in major transport projects such as High Speed 2, Heathrow Airport surface access, and large-scale new developments in Old Oak Common and Southall. All of these provide opportunities and risks for active travel in the borough. The Highways team delivers a range of projects, including cycling, bus priority, and road safety schemes. Our Transport team delivers other sustainable travel initiatives such as bike hangars, School Streets, micromobility, cargo bike schemes and strategic transport improvements, and we’d love you to join us.

This role is hybrid, with time split between the office in Ealing Broadway and remote working. We offer training opportunities and flexible working. The post is career-graded, with opportunities to progress from lower to higher grades if you meet the grade progression criteria set out in the role profile.

Don’t meet every single requirement? We know that sometimes people can be put off applying for a job if they think they can’t tick every box. So, if you can do most of what we’re looking for, go ahead and apply. You may be just the right candidate for the job!

This role is subject to Enhanced Vetting check.

You must have the right to work in the UK.  Evidence for the right to work in the UK will be requested at the interview stage.

Please note all applications will be determined on merit.
