Job description

Part time Science Technician

Hours: 20 hours pw

Scale: 4 term time only 38 weeks pa

Required: as soon as possible

We are looking for someone with good organisational and communication skills to join our team of science technicians.  The successful candidate should be able to carry out basic repairs to equipment, make up routine solutions, understand chemical formulae and have a knowledge of health and safety issues within a school science department.

Preparation of Teaching Materials.

  • Participating in the development of Science practical work
  • Advising staff of technical requirements raised by the curriculum
  • Preparing apparatus and materials, audio visual equipment etc for use in
  • Preparing special compounds, solutions, reagents and micro-biological materials for classwork
  • Setting up, retrieving and cleaning away apparatus at the beginning and end of lessons
  • Checking materials and equipment before and after use by a class for quantity and damage
  • Assisting staff when requested with demonstrations of practical techniques and data-logging experiments.

Equipment maintenance

  • General maintenance and cleaning of equipment and Science department resource
  • Maintenance of prep rooms and laboratory facilities
  • Ensuring all equipment meets health and safety regulations
  • Organising the storage of equipment, materials and apparatus in accordance with health and safety regulations where appropriate
  • Routine care of animal and plant resources. Collection and setting up of specialist animal and plant resources.

Stock Management – assisting the senior technician in:

  • Identifying equipment needs in consultation with teaching staff
  • Ensuring appropriate stock levels of apparatus and materials are maintained
  • Maintaining an up to date inventory of materials and equipment
  • Keeping appropriate financial records.
