Job description

Permanent contract

Ealing is a world class borough within a world class city. On the doorstep of Heathrow, home to the UK’s largest regeneration area at Old Oak and Park Royal that will accommodate London’s first High Speed 2 Terminus, and the borough now enjoys five new Elizabeth Line stations slashing journey times to 10 minutes from the heart of London. The borough has unrivalled connectivity and huge potential for economic growth and investment at a national scale of significance. It has seven town centres of cultural importance and vast swathes of industrial land surrounded by award winning parks linked by the Grand Union canal network, and one of the country’s most diverse and skilled populations. It is a great place to work, live and play.

As an organisation, Ealing Council has a long established and progressive approach to flexible and agile working and is committed to providing a healthy work-life balance to all staff. We care about the job you do, not where you do it from.

Our opportunity

As we emerge from the impacts of the pandemic and commence the delivery of Ealing’s new manifesto and Council Plan, the council is delivering an exciting and ambitious programme to work much closer with the Ealing business community that span our seven towns and multiple industrial areas. We have already produced our ‘Plan for Good Jobs – Towards an Inclusive Economy’, set up the Ealing High Streets Taskforce, delivered a programme of business support, and built good relations with key stakeholders including Heathrow Airport Limited and the Old Oak and Park Royal Corporation (OPDC), but there is much more to do. This includes setting up area-based job partnerships, an Ealing Business Forum, and drafting a new Local Plan that will include ambitious policies to ensure Ealing’s local economy can innovate, grow, and diversify so it becomes more inclusive and resilient in the years ahead. A key objective is creating 10,000 new jobs for Ealing residents and reducing in-work poverty. As such, these roles will work across multiple services including our economic growth, regeneration and employment and skills services.

The Ealing vision for a new relationship with business and a new economy is clear and ambitious, please join us at this this exciting time for the borough. You will have the autonomy and scope to lead and shape this exciting opportunity.

About you

Working across the council’s economic growth and employment and skills services, these are prominent roles within the organisation where you will lead in setting up and maintaining business growth and support programmes. You will enjoy working with and supporting a small team of dedicated and enthusiastic business growth, inward investment and employment and skills officers, who will in turn support you as the team quickly evolves to meet the needs of key stakeholders, including elected members, and key stakeholders within the Ealing business community. You will have good knowledge, expertise, and experience of economic development activity, preferably in a London context but this is not essential.  You will be proactive and adept in working across multiple teams within the organisation to ensure a collaborative approach and amplify the importance of Ealing’s local economy. You will enjoy building, maintaining, and developing the trust of delivery partners (public and private sector) and working with other key stakeholders at the town level.

You will also be comfortable in mediating difficult conversations that may occur between stakeholders with competing interests. It is essential to have excellent verbal and written communication skills to update on economic development matters to elected Members, councillors, senior officers, public and private sector partners.
