Job description

Are you an ambitious lawyer looking for a new challenge?

We are a highly regarded in-house legal department in west London looking to recruit an Employment and Tribunals lawyer to join our busy and friendly team.

The main focus of the role is to advise Council departments, Councillors and maintained schools on a full range of employment matters including policies and procedures, employment status, TUPE, restructures, disciplinaries, grievances and appeals against dismissal.

The successful candidate will also be expected to eventually advise on various education matters including Special Educational Needs and Disability issues, discrimination matters and school admissions, exclusions, complaints and appeals.

You will also be expected to prepare settlement agreements, contribute to cabinet reports and run your own Employment Tribunal, SEND Tribunal and appellate caseload.

You will manage and prioritise your workload, reporting to the Senior Employment Lawyer. You will also have the opportunity to work with other lawyers to ensure the delivery of high-quality legal services.

You will be a solicitor, barrister or legal executive (or hold an equivalent qualification from another jurisdiction) specialising in employment law, with a willingness to develop your knowledge and understanding in education law if you do not practice in this area already. You will also need to be willing to conduct the advocacy at Tribunal hearings where required.

You will have good attention to detail, the ability to communicate effectively and have excellent IT skills. You will also have the ability to work in a largely paperless way and within a team to meet the Council’s objectives.

Experience of local authority decision-making and education law would be an advantage, but not essential given training is available. The post is career graded with a salary ranging from £43,860 to £51,837 per annum.

We offer a range of employee benefits, including generous leave entitlement, flexible working and excellent pension provisions. We are based in modern offices close to the transport links of Ealing Broadway and the amenities of Ealing town centre, although it is presently envisaged that the role will predominantly be carried out from home.

For an informal discussion about the role please contact Shahzad Ayub, the Senior Employment Lawyer, on 020 8825 5192 (direct) or by email: ayubs@ealing.gov.uk

This role is subject to Ealing Council’s enhanced vetting process.

Closing date: 29 November 2021
